As a member of our national team in Veteran Relationships, Mike helps connect other veterans with this mission. Here, he stepped in front of the camera to share his own experiences.

IT IS THE BEGINNING.
Houston launches a 62-city national journey across all 50 states designed to engage veterans, preserve voices and bring communities together during America’s 250th anniversary.
WHY 250,000 VOICES?
BECAUSE EVERY GENERATION LOSES STORIES IT THOUGHT IT WOULD HAVE TIME TO SAVE.
There is a veteran whose grandchildren have never heard what happened overseas. A Vietnam veteran who came home to silence. A Gold Star family carrying a name the world should remember. A young veteran still discovering what the next chapter looks like.
History is not only made by the names printed in books. It lives in people.
We are finding those voices, recording them, preserving them and carrying them forward.

And that's what I did, because I started talking to them, I'm trying to make them understand, what you got right now, you're never gonna get rid of it. So deal with it.
But let me tell you, when I came back from Vietnam, I still had 18 months of duty, I didn't, I wasn't drafted. So it wasn't, like, a two year combat and you're back home. How the hell do you process that? You can't.
I went from a Ranger company in ‘Nam, I went to a Ranger company in Fort Benning. I'm around fellow Rangers, you know, and most of them had combat experience like me. We could talk every night. It helped because I had that time. I wasn't going anywhere. So you talk to other vets, and you learn to deal.
These guys don't. They can't talk to their parents. So it's kind of hard for them to connect. So they keep more of it balled in than they should.
